Donations and Bequests

The Humanist Schools in Uganda are already providing a liberal-secular education to over 350 young people, many of whom would otherwise have been denied secondary education. The schools work hand-in-hand with their local communities, who have helped to clear land, make access roads, bricks and furniture from local materials and with building work. Those children who can afford to pay a small amount in school fees, but this represents a small proportion of each school's running costs. Teachers and other staff are working for very little pay - but they are hoping that things will improve in future.

Outside assistance is crucial if the schools are to be able to: recruit orphans and students from families with little or no cash income, provide reasonable pay and conditions for teachers, raise the standards of education through the use of books and other learning resources and improve school buildings and infrastructure to create an effective learning environment. The three schools have come a long way in a short time but they are struggling to meet the high ideals they set for themselves. With your support, they have the potential to match and, hopefully, surpass the standards found in competing and better funded faith and government schools. The Uganda Humanist Association is engaged in a pioneering experiment. With your help they can succeed and provide a model for the development of high quality secular-Humanist education elsewhere in Africa and worldwide.

Ways you could help the schools:

1. Cash donations give schools the flexibility to direct money according to the greatest need at the time. They allow the schools to buy essential books and learning resources and make provision for art, music and sports. They also help the schools to ensure that teachers are paid adequately and to make infrastructure improvements to water supply, electricity, kitchens, toilet and washing facilities.

2. Targeted fundraising for specific large items in excess of £1000. This might particularly appeal to groups wishing to organise fundraising events as part of thier social programmes. We are willing to discuss with the schools and donors the most appropriate targets for such efforts. For some fundraising ideas click here...

3. Scholarships for the schooling of needy children. £120 meets the costs for one year of school fees, breakfast and lunch and, by boosting school income, it helps to raise standards for all children. For more information about scholarships click here...

4. Making a bequest: You could help to secure a liberal-Humanist education for generations of children in Uganda by leaving money in your Will to help the schools. You could also invite a school to dedicate a new school building or a scholarship in your name. For guidance on wording your Will or adding a Codicil click here...
